IICF UK Supports Tutors United in Closing Education and Employment Gaps
IICF UK-funded programme helps disadvantaged children build confidence and academic skills while creating career opportunities for university students in Tower Hamlets.
Children from disadvantaged backgrounds across the UK are significantly less likely to meet expected standards in reading, writing and maths, with pupils from low-income families falling an average of 10 months behind their peers.
To help address this challenge, IICF UK is proud to highlight the work of Tutors United in this month’s Story of Impact. The charity is tackling educational inequality through community-based tutoring and career development opportunities, supporting young people at two critical transition points: from primary to secondary school, and from university into employment.
Supporting Children to Succeed
With funding from IICF UK, Tutors United is delivering a 30-week programme in Tower Hamlets, where university students provide 60 hours of high-quality after-school tuition to children at risk of falling behind as they prepare for secondary school.
The programme focuses on strengthening core English and Maths skills while building confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.
A Dual-Impact Model
What makes Tutors United unique is its dual-impact approach, benefiting both younger pupils and the university students who support them.
Through the programme:
12 children receive targeted English and Maths tuition to improve literacy and numeracy skills.
Three university students gain paid tutoring roles, professional experience and career development opportunities.
Twelve families receive support that helps parents engage with and encourage learning at home.
Delivering Measurable Results
The programme is already demonstrating strong outcomes for both pupils and tutors:
80% of pupils are expected to make academic progress.
80% report increased confidence, resilience and independence in learning.
80% of tutors develop key employability skills and progress into meaningful employment opportunities.
