Go Live Theatre Projects – unlocking possibilities
Too many children and young people face barriers to accessing the arts. For those with disabilities, sensory impairments or additional needs, theatre can feel confusing, overwhelming or simply out of reach – limiting opportunities to build confidence, connection and self-expression. Go Live Theatre uses the power of live performance to change that experience. With the support of an IICF grant, the charity has delivered inclusive theatre access and creative learning projects that ensure young people can experience theatre in ways that work for them.
In Spring 2024, IICF funding supported StageXchange, a 12-week creative drama programme at Caxton Youth Organisation for young people aged 11–25 with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Weekly workshops helped participants build skills, trust and confidence through drama. In Spring 2025, Go Live Theatre delivered Envision, a theatre access project for blind and visually impaired young people in London. Five specialist secondary schools attended a Macbeth-based day at Shakespeare’s Globe, reaching 45 young people and 25 teachers. Young people with learning disabilities also attended a Relaxed Performance of Matilda the Musical, supported by preparatory workshops and touch tours.
The most powerful impact is heard from the families themselves. One parent shared, “On the way home, my child said it was the first time she had ever understood a show…” Another reflected, “She loved the workshop and would normally stand back in new environments, but everyone was made to feel welcome and part of the group.”
These moments – understanding a story, feeling confident enough to participate, belonging in a shared cultural space – are small on the surface, but life-changing in practice. By the end of the StageXchange programme:
- 71% felt happy performing in front of others.
- 86% felt confident sharing their ideas with a group
- 71% felt happy trying something new.
For many participants this was their first sustained engagement with creative learning – a significant step towards social confidence and self-expression.
Feedback from Envision was equally powerful:
- 100% of teachers felt the day built learners’ confidence,
- 100% believed it was a positive bonding experience
- 100% agreed it made theatre more accessible.
