Bookmark Reading Charity

Bookmark Reading Charity – developing a deep love of reading

Did you know 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read well and that almost 1 million children in the UK don’t have a single book at home?

To celebrate World Book Day, we’re proud to share IICF’s story of impact with Bookmark Reading Charity who are helping to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. The charity partners with primary schools to help students learn to read, build confidence and succeed at school and beyond.

IICF’s 2024 grant allowed Bookmark to enter new, deprived communities – providing over 57,000 high-quality books to 505 primary schools, as well as over 43,000 reading sessions to 1,842 children in 146 schools – an incredible impact!

99% of surveyed teachers reported that the free books and resources made a positive difference to children’s enjoyment of reading and ImpactEd, an educational research organisation, has reported that children participating in Bookmark’s One-to-One Reading Programme increased their standardised reading score by an average of 5.8 throughout the year. In their own words:

“The children who have been involved in the Bookmark reading sessions have been making fantastic progress in their reading comprehension assessments and their fluency has improved brilliantly!”- Teacher at a Bookmark partner school
