Diverse Pathways into Insurance – Julie’s story

From Humble Beginnings to Impactful Leadership
Julie’s professional path is a testament to resilience, determination and a steadfast belief in the power of education and mentorship. Growing up in a multigenerational, low-income household, she learned early on that hard work and empathy could open doors that once seemed locked. “I grew up in my grandmother’s house. We didn’t have much, but I had people around me who taught me to work hard and stay curious.”
As the youngest of four children, Julie watched her older siblings carve their own paths while she developed a quiet determination to create something different for herself. She recalls “I was the youngest by quite a long way. My brothers and sisters had already gone through similar struggles, I was able to learn from their experiences.” These early lessons became integral components of her future success, along with her inherent perseverance and adaptability.
Julie’s academic journey was not without obstacles. Balancing part-time work with her studies, she often felt the weight of expectation and financial strain. However, rather than let these challenges define her, she used them as motivation. “There were moments when I wasn’t sure if I could keep going,” she admitted. “But every time I faced a barrier, I thought about why I started and who I wanted to become.”
Her persistence paid off. After completing her studies, Julie began her career as junior administrator within a large organisation, where she quickly distinguished herself through curiosity and initiative. She was never afraid to ask questions, and she took every opportunity to learn from mentors. “I’ve always believed that you don’t have to know everything,” she said. “You just have to be willing to learn.”
Over time, Julie rose through the ranks, taking on increasingly complex leadership roles. Along the way, she faced the all-too-familiar challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated environment. She refused to let moments when her ideas were overlooked or undervalued discourage her from fulfilling her goals. Instead, she developed her own strategy of letting her results speak louder than her frustrations. “I realised that if I focused on delivering excellence, people couldn’t ignore me,” she explained. “That’s when I started to find my voice.”
Today, Julie leads with empathy and intention. Her approach is rooted in collaboration and trust. She’s particularly passionate about developing the next generation of leaders. “I know what it feels like to be the person in the room who doubts they belong,” she said. “So I make it my mission to make sure others don’t feel that way.”
Outside of work, Julie channels her energy into giving back to the community that shaped her. She volunteers with youth mentoring programs and regularly speaks at career workshops for underrepresented groups. “When I see someone realise their potential, it reminds me of where I started,” she reflected. “It’s my way of paying forward all the support I received.”
Julie’s story is not simply one of professional achievement, it’s one of transformation. She has turned adversity into advantage, using her experiences to inspire and empower others. “Success isn’t about titles or recognition,” she said thoughtfully. “It’s about creating opportunities for others to grow and thrive.”
Her journey from a modest childhood home to a leadership role as Head of UK Compliance at Aspen Insurance is proof that background does not define destiny. Through perseverance, humility, and an unwavering belief in lifelong learning, Julie has built a career that combines achievement with purpose. As she continues to mentor others, she remains guided by the same values that shaped her beginnings: resilience, gratitude and the courage to keep moving forward.
To celebrate 10 years in the UK, we are showcasing diversity within our industry as part of our work to improve social mobility. IICF believes the insurance industry can be a united force for good and that everyone should be able to achieve their full potential. Through our focus on social mobility, we are helping to change lives in our local community by uniting the industry in grants, volunteering and leadership while helping build a more inclusive industry.
