From Fighter Pilot to Aviation Lawyer – A story of hard work and making the most of your luck

The path to a successful career is often winding and unpredictable. This holds especially true for Mark Welbourn, a lawyer specialising in aviation risk, whose journey from aspiring fighter pilot to prominent legal professional is both inspiring and unconventional.
From a young age, Mark had his sights set on a career as a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force. This aspiration shaped his early life, driving him to excel academically and focus on achieving the necessary qualifications. He recalls being particularly motivated by a teacher, Mr. Woods, who made learning enjoyable and fostered a deep interest in education. Another significant influence during his formative years was his time spent working at a local riding stable, managed by an ex-policeman named Mr Hickling. This experience taught him the value of perseverance and hard work, lessons that would serve him well throughout his varied career.
Mark joined the Royal Airforce and trained as a pilot, however, his dream of becoming a fighter pilot did not come to fruition and led to a change in direction. Opting to study law out of sheer interest, Mark embarked on a new path. Graduating in 1991 during a recession and unable to find employment at a law firm, Mark chose to be a rigger on a North Sea pipeline, which ultimately funded his next move. Always keen to continue learning and add to life experience, Mark chose to complete a masters degree in the United States.
Back in the UK, Mark’s breakthrough came through a serendipitous conversation with a university friend who worked in-house at Airbus. She introduced him to Beaumont and Son, the only boutique aviation law firm at the time. Despite his modest academic background, he impressed the interview panel, particularly a partner who recognised his potential and relevant knowledge. This opportunity set the stage for a successful career in aviation risk law. Mark’s unique background, combining legal expertise with a deep interest in aviation, made him an invaluable asset to the firm.
Now a seasoned partner at Kennedys Law LLP, Mark reflects on his experience and hiring practices within the legal industry. He believes that firms often miss out on talented individuals who may not fit the typical profile but possess the drive, interest and unique skills that can greatly benefit the profession. Mark advocates for a more inclusive approach, emphasising the importance of accessibility, recognising potential beyond academic achievements and outreach to raise awareness of the opportunities within the legal field among young people.
Mark continues to champion social mobility and diversity within the industry. He stresses the need for policies that genuinely expand opportunities for all and encourage employees to reach out to diverse communities within their network. Mark’s most valuable piece of career advice is: “Be interested in what you’re doing, whatever it is.”
His own journey is marked by ever present desire to learn, persevere and adapt, as well as being alert to making the most of fortuitous moments. It serves as a testament to the idea that career paths are rarely linear. His story is a reminder that with the right mindset one can achieve success in the most unexpected ways.
